Coupling the passport to the blockchain: NFC-mediated interface to the horse’s data asset on MustangChain.
The First Component
The first step is to digitalize the passport and put information on the MustangChain. By scanning the NFC chip in the passport, through a mobile application, the user will have direct access to the corresponding data asset on the blockchain. This data will be displayed through the Official MustangChain app that forms the interface between the user and the blockchain. Different users will be given different authorization to either add data to the asset (e.g. veterinarian and studbook organizations) or to be only able to read the data (e.g. buyers, enthusiasts, riders, research institutions, and trainers).
Individuals only authorized to read the data, will only need to scan the passport to read the data asset via the Official MustangChain app. However, stakeholders that are authorized to add data to the asset, such as veterinarians and studbook organizations, will receive a unique wallet I.D. on the blockchain and will be assigned the corresponding data assets of equines that fall under their care.
The data that will be recorded on the blockchain by the authorized party includes the following:
- Studbook/breeding (Studbook federation/horse breeder name, address, and UELN number; Heritage; Pedigree; Studbook number; Birth complications).
- Basic Equine Information (Outer features; Passport issuance; ID information; Unique Identification Number (UIN) of the horse).
- Medical (Vaccinations; Past injuries; Past/current medication received; Date of castration if applicable).
However, this is a preliminary list of prioritized data variables. Other variables, such as sport results, may be added to the data asset of the horse later on. MustangChain will start working with the current equine passports as issued and paste the NFC chip onto the passport. These NFC chips will be from the third generation of VeChain NFC chipset which are designed in a way that they cannot be removed without destroying the underlying circuitry. Finally, MustangChain will also experiment with new types of equine passports, such as a passcard with an embedded NFC chip. In cooperation with the equine industry, MustangChain will explore possibilities to slowly replace the current paper passport with these new technologically advanced types of passports.

The Second Component
Connecting the equine microchip to the blockchain
MustangChain aims to incorporate existing solutions with blockchain technology to improve verification of equine ID. Different countries already have regulations in place that protect against fraudulent activities. In the EU for example it is mandatory to microchip each horse. Scanning a microchip with a custom device, which any horse breeder or owner often already owns, will display a unique identification number (UIN).
This UIN will be recorded to the data asset on the MustangChain. Matching the UIN from the microchip scanning device to the UIN displayed in the data asset will consequently verify horse identity.
Connecting the equine iris scan to the blockchain
MustangChain will take a revolutionary approach to the identification of equines. Most regulations are erected due to potential health concerns that may arise by introducing a foreign material (microchip) into the horse’s biological system. Only a trained and registered professional can microchip a horse.
To identify a horse without utilizing invasive measures (i.e. blood sampling or microchipping) MustangChain have opted to use iris scan identification, since this is a highly reliable way to uniquely identify horses. New technologies regarding iris scanners create a Unique Identification Number (UIN) based on the iris scan, much like mobile phones use algorithms to store human fingerprints.
